Driver Brings Home Singles Title on Last Day of Ducks Invitational
EUGENE, ORE. – The University of Oregon women’s tennis team concluded their first home tournament of the 2011-12 fall schedule this weekend (Oct. 21-23). The friendly confines of the 18th Street tennis courts in Eugene, Ore. propelled the Ducks to three great days of tennis highlighted by Haley Driver winning the 2011 Ducks Invitational Main Singles Draw title.
“The fall is off to a good start with one more trip to Houston in two weeks,” said women’s tennis head coach Paul Reber. “We’re looking to finish the fall schedule strong and be ready to head into the dual match season in 2012.”
For the Ducks, it was Driver who led the way over the weekend. The Scottsdale, Ariz. native competing in just her second collegiate tournament went 5-0 on her way to the singles title. The frshman defeated the Air Force Academy’s Hannah Cecil in the finals 6-4, 6-1.
“Congratulations to Haley winning the Ducks Invitational,” remarked coach Reber. “Her college career is off to a great start and with a lot of hard work there should be more to come.”
Driver won 10 consecutive sets on her way to the finals victory after dropping the first set of her first match. The freshman is off to a great start at Oregon, pushing her singles record to 9-1. The win in the Ducks invitational final comes on the heels of making it to the semifinals at the CSUF Intercollegiate.
The Ducks continued play in singles consolation “put-together” matches. Lana Buttner fell to Air Force’s Hannah Dake in a tough three set tiebreaker 2-6, 6-2, 10-8. In other singles action, Oregon’s Lena Macomson lost to Air Force’s Marcelli Magday 7-6, 6-3.
The Ducks next appear in Houston, Texas for the Houston Invitation November 4 – 6.
