Nov. 15, 2010 rebuilding champions

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia freshman defender Nikki Hill was one of 20 players invited to the Canadian U-20 women’s national team training camp in Sao Paulo, Brazil, head coach Carolina Morace and the organization announced Sunday.

The event is slated for Nov. 29-Dec. 7 in conjunction with the Senior WNT Camp. The U-20s are preparing for the Nordic Cup next summer.

Canada’s U-20 squad has its sights set on the next FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup cycle in 2012, with the 2012 CONCACAF championship to serve as the opportunity for qualification.

“I’m really excited for the next U-20 camp in Brazil and I feel like my team at UGA and the coaching staff has really helped me prepare for this,” Hill said. “In the past I’ve been to Mexico, all over Canada and the United States with this team, so Brazil will be a new, exciting experience to help us prepare for the 2012 World Cup.”

Hill played in 17 games for the Bulldogs in her rookie season, primarily on the back line, helping the Bulldogs to an 11-6-4 campaign. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native tallied one assist on the year, which came in Georgia’s 3-0 victory over Mississippi State Oct. 10 in Starkville, Miss.

Hill saw perhaps her biggest action of the year when she stepped in for the injured Rebekah Perry at right back in the SEC Championship quarterfinals vs. Auburn. Hill came off the bench and ended up playing stellar defense for 68 minutes including two overtime periods as the Bulldogs earned a win over the Tigers in the 106th minute to advance to the semifinals.

“We’re excited for Nikki – she’s someone who’s worked incredibly hard,” said Georgia head coach Steve Holeman. “Nikki came into preseason as one of our fittest players. She gained a lot of valuable playing time throughout this season, and this is a great opportunity for her to represent Canada. We feel confident that she will excel in that environment.”

The defender was called up the U-20 camp this past June in Alliston, Ontario and has previous camp experience in South Surrey, British Columbia; Juarez, Mexico; and El Paso, Texas.

Canada names roster for women’s U-20 camp in Surrey

Canada’s women’s U-20 team will hold its first of two Canadian identification camps this 9-12 May in Surrey, BC. Coach Carolina Morace has selected 22 players for the four-day camp which will conclude with an exhibition match against Whitecaps FC on 12 May.

“This camp will help identify players that could become part of our national U-20 program,” said national head coach Carolina Morace. “This will be our first chance to look at this group of players in a national camp setting.”

The Surrey camp will precede a similar four-day identification camp in Toronto which runs 13-16 May. That second camp will feature a new group of players.

Many of the players in the camp have previously taken part in the BMO National Championships or Canada Games Women’s Soccer Tournament. Of note, Canada Games MVP Jenna Richardson recently represented Canada at the 2010 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship this past January. Most of the players also come from Canada’s National Training Centre Programs in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Canada’s women’s U-20 team, whose title sponsor is Winners, is just starting to prepare for the next FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup cycle in 2012. Players selected for this camp are all born 1992 or 1993 and are thus eligible for the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship. That CONCACAF championship will serve as the qualification route for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2012.
