The mThrow-pitching sleeve is an easy to use, easy to interpret device that allows for tracking and analysis of specific movement patterns related to throwing, and is available for use at the Center for Athletic Performance and Physical Therapy. mThrow is able to track current trends in your rehabilitation, ensuring proper mechanics and reducing any likelihood of overuse while you perform on and off the field and in therapy. This device is non-cumbersome and easily worn during normal therapy, game, or practice sessions.
Arm injuries in overhead athletes are an unfortunate, yet somewhat preventable aspect of competition. Recent increases in arm injuries in youth sports have been linked to increased pressure to perform at your best. A poor understanding of the movement and throwing mechanics, with a poor understanding of the proper rest to work ratio, accompanied by specific movement strategies necessary to perform the movements involved in throwing, the mThrow analyzes those aspects, plus more to deter assumptions. Doctors, James Andrews and Glenn Fleisig, two of the top researchers into sports rehabilitation, specializing in throwing arm health, have recently begun a quest to attempt to better understand and prevent further injury. Through their research they have found several interesting statistics. Out of those stats, possibly the most shocking is that 5% of all youth pitchers will suffer either a serious elbow or shoulder injury within the next 10 years1. Though this seems small, in the grand scheme of things it’s a pretty significant number of preventable injuries that we are subjecting our youth to. This is where the mThrow elbow sleeve is beneficial.
Mobile App Displays
The mThrow receives input from the users own body to produce biomechanical feedback to the sleeve, which host sensors, known as the accelerometer, to capture the data. The data provided is valuable information to coaches, parents, and healthcare providers to aid in the prevention of these overuse injuries, and can even be used therapeutically to aid in monitoring recovery from existing injuries. All of the data recorded through the accelerometer is fed into a free app downloadable to all mobile devices or tablet, and can allow for tracking of trends in the athlete’s throwing mechanics. Data output includes elbow height, arm speed, arm slot, max shoulder rotation, stress, and pitch count. All of the data is easy to understand interpretations of each metric measured, giving the user a full understanding of the importance and reasoning behind their use.
